The House

A technological and artful home that will intrigue heart and mind. It will wow you at every turn and make you re-think what "off grid" living means. A large solar array provides ample power and two large cisterns collect rainwater that is purified with ozone and filtered to provide some of the cleanest water you can find. There is a back up generator for when there is not enough sun. The 14 sides, wrap around porch, hurricane resistant construction, all wood interior and local art work together to create a peaceful energy that is hard to describe unless you have been there. .

Luxury in the Wild

Two ample bedrooms, each with a queen bed, share a large and well appointed bath. The chef's kitchen with high end range and accoutrements, tight insulation, zoned air conditioning, high speed WiFi, large TV, washer and dryer will not disappoint. The 360 degree views of the constantly changing marsh, pond and maritime forest will make you want to just soak it all up from the porch and never leave

Exclusive Access

8 acres of woods, a deep water dock, campfire/oyster roast area, trails,  a pond and abundant wildlife all reachable only by boat ensure  privacy for your get-away. Opt for personalized fishing guides and tours, or indulge in meals either stocked in the house for you or even prepared by a private chef if you wish. We can keep it simple and let you take care of yourself or we can provide an unforgettable experience curated by locals who know.

The Cusabo Story

The island is a place where many stories have been made. Come add yours.

When our family purchased the island in 1996 it already had many stories. We re-named it Cusabo (instead of the boring "Long Island" it was on some maps or "Middle Coles" as it was on others) to honor the tribe that left oyster mounds and pottery there for thousands of years and also because one of the owners is Native American (Lumbee) herself. The Island played a part in the Civil War and was occupied by Confederate and then Union soldiers. Shortly after that it was home to "Uncle Willy" Hernandez and his wife. He was an entrepreneur of sorts that had fish camps, sold seafood commercially, repaired boats, made moonshine and was a "rum runner" during Prohibition. They are buried on the West end of the island.

Cusabo is about 1 mile long and skinny and about 40 acres of high-ish land. We divided it into 4 indivisible parcels and kept a middle one for ourselves. There are two other houses out there but hey are far apart. Over our 25 plus years of ownership we have collected too many stories to tell here as we slowly opened up the dense undergrowth to create an enjoyable Lowcountry escape that is like no other. Finally in 2023 we achieved our long term goal of building a solar powered home there that is part art project, part science project and all a labor of love. We are very proud of it and we enjoy sharing it with like minded folks.
